You are the nurse

A student observer and uncertainty about saying no

Setting: A community clinic

A student nurse is scheduled to observe a consultation. The patient seems hesitant. The clinic can conduct the appointment without the observer, and the patient may change their preference.

Task

  • Explore the concern behind the opening: "I suppose the student can stay if that is what I am meant to say."
  • Clarify the specific barrier and acknowledge its effect on the patient.
  • Explain the supplied next steps and respond to this possible question: "If I say yes now, can I ask them to leave later when we reach the private part?"
  • Check the patient can distinguish what is agreed from what needs confirmation.
A student observer and uncertainty about saying no supplied plan
  • A student nurse is scheduled to observe a consultation. The patient seems hesitant. The clinic can conduct the appointment without the observer, and the patient may change their preference.
  • The appointment can proceed without the student observer, with the same planned nursing discussion.
  • The patient can change their preference about observation during the appointment; agreement should not be inferred from hesitation.
  • Do not suggest that care depends on accepting a student or ask the patient to justify a refusal.
  • We can ask the student to leave and continue the planned appointment together. You do not need to justify declining an observer.
  • If you do choose to have a student present, you can change that preference during the appointment. I want an actual choice from you, not agreement because you feel pressured.

Fictional exam scenario only. Supplied arrangements are not medical guidance for a real patient..
